Working With God

Oftentimes we throw out the "God is in control" phrase, and it becomes an unconscious excuse to do nothing. Believe it or not, God needs us to execute His will on the earth. Although He is all capable, in some ways He chooses to limit Himself to our "co-laboring" with Him. I think it's because He is all about relationship...

He wants us to seek Him, to know His heart, to know His ways through intimate fellowship.  It is in those times that we see through His eyes and begin to pray for and take action on those things He deposits into our hearts.  It's only in this manner of living that we truly are allowing Him to be in control.  Remember, "God is only in control of our lives when we are not." -ss

What is so great is we have been given the promise that when we pray anything in His name, in His will, we will have whatsoever we ask of Him.  This is a working relationship.  God Almighty WANTS to work together with us. How amazing is that?

(Matthew 7:11; Mark 16:17-20; John 14:14; John 15:7, 16; John 16:23-24; 1 Corinthians 3:9; 2 Corinthians 6:1; Philippians 4:6; James 4:3; 1 John 5:14)

Grateful in the Storm

We need to consciously make the decision to be grateful in our negative circumstances; grateful that it is in these times God can do His greatest work in us if we allow Him. God's love amazes me that even in our self induced messes, He still wants to work in our lives for the ultimate goal of bringing us closer to Himself. Knowing this, we need to change our outlook in the storms of life... True character is shown and true character can be grown during tough times...  Let's use it to become better! :)

Inner Healing

You know where the lie is
Deep within my soul
Though I never knew it was buried
All these things You know

You removed the scabs that covered
The pain that needed to be revealed
What I thought I had forgotten
Was never truly healed

It’s not Your will for partial healing
But to make me completely whole
Father, do what it is You have to do
To bring completeness to my soul

These hindrances You want to erase
So I can be all You’ve called me to be
I have to admit it’s not easy, Lord
I need You to carry me

I start in Your arms, but You urge me to crawl
And then You lift me upon my feet
You don’t want me to just get through life
You haven’t ordained a life of defeat

You press me on and encourage me
To count it all joy in this time
Though it’s not easy, and the pain is strong
You remind me that victory’s mine

The way to my healing is in Your name
By no other can I be set free
You’re a faithful God…I will not doubt
I know You will heal me…

Pride

What is one thing that we rarely see in ourselves, but it is clearly seen by others?

Pride.

It takes a really hard look and a sincere asking of God to shine a light on it (just like He had to do with Paul on the Road to Damascus). It's a painful experience falling off of a "high horse" and being blinded by the very light that frees us, but the outcome far outweighs the temporal pain because...

 …pride destroys.

Pride is a repellant for a healthy relationship. Its very presence shuts those around us down. It sprays out unspoken venom that says "You're inadequate and will never measure up to my perfection. Your opinion does not matter. You will always be a little lower than me. Don’t oppose my thoughts or I will reject or withhold from you.”

Prideful people won't admit it, but they don't want to hear about someone else's success. It repulses them. They choke on seeing anyone else succeed or possibly stand out brighter than themselves. They can frequently talk about themselves and their accomplishments but if someone else does "they are too into themselves." When sharing about yourself or another person, one with pride often will overtake the conversation by either "upping" the other person or somehow turning the whole conversation back to themselves where the initial subject matter somehow vanishes.

Prideful people belittle, argue, always have an opposing argument (not allowing others the right to their own opinions without snide remarks or looks of disgust), cause dissensions, make light of other's pain, lack compassion, struggle with sincere apologies, always an excuse for their wrongdoing, and silence is a rare act. (1Timothy 6:4, Proverbs 11:12)

Let's see what the Bible says:

 1. It is an abomination to God; will not go unpunished (Proverbs 16:5)

2. It is deceiving (Galatians 6:3)

3. More hope for a fool (Proverbs 26:12)

4. Brings destruction (Proverbs 16:18, Proverbs 18:12, Proverbs 29:23, Psalm 31:23)

5. God Himself opposes us (James 4:6)

6. Lack understanding, unteachable (2 Corinthians 10:12, Proverbs 15:12)

7. Not approved of God (2 Corinthians 10:18)

8. Lacks love (1 Corinthians 13:4)

9. Clean in their own eyes, but not God's (Proverbs 30:12)

10. Become fools (Romans 1:22)

For the sake of your reading time, I will stop there, but the Scriptures are seemingly endless on the subject. Fact of the matter is, if we don't pay close attention and deal with the pride in our lives, God will. Rather than having the very One we need on our side, we place ourselves on His opposing team. Remember Lucifer? He was cast out of God's presence because of what? His pride. God resists the proud. I don't know about you, but I do not want Him pushing me but rather pulling me to Himself.

This unapproachable, unteachable bubble we are encompassed in will ultimately kill everything around us. The very one we exalted above others and their feelings will be all we are left with (Proverbs 12:9). It's scriptural and it's no joking matter. Better to humble ourselves than to be humbled by God. (Luke 14:11)

Father, our pride keeps us from hearing You. It keeps us from learning. It keeps us from healthy relationships. It shuts others out. It causes us to ignore the needs of others and become calloused to their pains.  It blinds us from seeing others as You do. It makes us zero in on their wrongdoings and have a “they deserve it” mentality. We fail to realize that we too deserve nothing in and of ourselves, but because of Your mercy, you have blessed us anyway.

We choose today to humble ourselves, to compare ourselves to Your perfection rather than to the accomplishments or lack thereof of others.  We want a true change in our hearts, Lord… not a false humility where we get in the “ditch” and go the other direction with a “Woe is me. I’m a worthless sinner.” We know that is not Your will either. We can be confident in You and what You do through us as long as it is never at the expense of hurting others or making light of what You are doing in them as well. We need Your help, Lord. We submit to Your ways and ask You to reveal to us when pride rears its ugly head. We want it completely eradicated from our lives in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Sermon Nuggets and Afterthoughts

I had the privilege to hear a Jewish missionary from Israel speak recently.  He spoke on the NINE fruits of the spirit in Galatians 6 in correlation to the NINE spices listed in Song of Solomon 4.  I had never heard of these two groupings of scriptures referencing one another before.  I have not done the study myself, but definitely found it intriguing and something to look further into.  I walked away with a stronger desire to be proactive in cultivating the fruit in my life and becoming a person of strong character.

There was far too much to it to mentally capture or physically jot down and give it justice.  So I am just going to type as I remember it and add in personal thoughts as they come. J

The young woman in Song of Solomon was at that time considered to be an unlearned, peasant girl and the man was a king.  In the very beginning of the book she was awakened to love; just like we become awakened to the love of God before we come to Him.  The king had to teach and show her what it is she needed in order to reign with him.

When you move to the 4th chapter it speaks of the woman being a garden.  We are also the garden; a garden that is meant to live and thrive and grow good fruit that is pleasing to our King.

The fruit that jumped out to me was meekness.  The origin of the word means “to suffer without retaliation.”  Wow.  That sure broadened a word for me that I thought simply meant “teachable.”

David was a meek man.  He did not retaliate against Saul when he had opportunities to do so.  Both Saul and David were anointed.  What set David apart is he was a man with character (fruits of the spirit).  He likened Saul to a church who is called and anointed but has not developed character.  We can settle with being like Saul.  We will still be used by God.  We may even slay our thousands.  However, if we develop our character like David did, we will slay ten thousands, so to speak.  (1 Samuel 18:7)  We will have greater power and presence of God working in our lives and in our ministries.

Someone asked how important the gifts of the Spirit were.  He said they are essential, but not foundational.  He said we need to desire them and want to be used in them, but without character, our influence and our relationship with the Lord will be limited.  Anointing builds the church but needs to be built on character.

The fruit of the spirit attracts God's presence.  We become a sweet smelling aroma to Him and He is drawn to that.  (2 Corinthians 2:15, Ephesians 5:2)  When we react the right way, it brings God's presence.  When we react wrong, we nauseate Him. (Psalm 95:10)  The word grieved in that scripture literally means disgusted, nauseated, to make vomit. :(

Jesus Christ.  Christ is not His last name, as we know.  Christ means anointing.  Satan, anti-Christ = anti-anointing.  He hates the anointing that builds the church.  Made me think that this is why he fights our spirit walk so hard to get us to defer to walking in the flesh.  Flesh produces death.  Flesh never produces life and anointing.

Another question asked was how to overcome anger.  He said we need to get to the root of it so God can heal us, but even apart from doing that, if we learn to walk in the fruit of peace, anger will be diminished.  It is like a buffer.  Imagine someone walking with a full cup of water to the brim.  Someone bumps them, it spills.  That's how it is when someone has pent up anger.  However, if we are walking in peace, even if the anger is underneath, there's a buffer there; a covering that allows for us a little extra time to not react in anger.  It reminded me of Philippians 4:7, "Then you will experience God’s peace [when you pray and give thanks, verse 6], which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will GUARD your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." His peace guards and keeps us.

When our peace is disturbed, we need to stop and identify the fear attached to that moment.  In finding the root, we can be set free to walk in faith and not fear.  Fear is the default mode for our flesh.  Faith allows us to walk in the spirit and not default to our natural flesh reactions.  Faith shields us. (1 Peter 1:5)

He shared he unknowingly had fear of abandonment his whole life due to being away from his mother for nearly a year after her suicide attempt when he was a young boy.  Once he got to the root of that fear, he learned to walk in the fruit of peace so he has that "buffer" to react properly.  He said without peace, he is sure his reactions would not be pleasant.  I found it interesting that he said lavender in Song of Solomon 4 was peace.  As we know, we use lavender for relaxation J

Final thoughts:  As I pondered on all of this today, I got to thinking about the gifts brought to Jesus after his birth.

Gold = Associated with kings and kingdoms
Frankincense = Faith/faithfulness
Myrrh = Meekness

The King of kings (gold), who suffered for us without retaliation (myrrh), was faithful even unto death (frankincense)!  J

Hero

Boldness arises

Strength to speak truth

Words somehow choked

Left broken and confused

Blamed when standing up against

This chief of control

Explaining creates havoc

Shut up and let it go

Repressing our desires

Invalidating our need

Gasping for a breath

That’s far out of reach

Martyr emerges

“Takes one for the team”

Grants air he sees unnecessary

Enough to let us breathe

Self proclaimed hero

Master puppeteer

What is considered normal to most

Does not reside here

Forced into a reality

Devised for a dwelling of one

Irrational expectations

Simple things made cumbersome

Fear based way of living

Will I do it right?

Basic things that people do

Should I ask for it and chance a fight?

Silent rejection

Ambience turns dense

Did I walk too hard?  Laugh too loud?

Find joy in what to him makes no sense?

Little room for freedom

Occasional sips from his hand

Just enough to make one think

He’s starting to understand

Show excessive thanks when permitted

What he considers a futile wish

Shower this hero with accolades

As he allows some humanness

Lives sacrificed on an altar

In his inverted world

Basic normalcy given up

An act of respect with no reward

Surprise curve balls of liberty

Occasionally enter this field

Confusion and guilt muddle the mind

What is it I really feel?

Have the internal complaints on our part

Been rebellious and self-seeking?

Or has too much power been given

To one who does not care about our well being?
